3 vols.; 352 mm.

Vol. I: T.pl., [101] leaves carrying [107] prints. - Vol. II: T.pl., [98] leaves carrying [126] prints. - Vol. III: T.pl., engr. device, [98] leaves carrying [133] prints.

Responsibility Note

The three title-plates and the engraved device of Deuchar in Vol. III are unsigned. In Vol. I most plates are signed as painted or drawn by A. van Ostade (but pl. [72] is signed as designed by D. Deuchar), and as engraved by D. Deuchar. In Vol. II most plates are unsigned with the name of a source-artist, but some are engraved with the name of Rembrandt, two with that of J. van Vliet (pl.[47, 48]), four with that of C. Bega (pl. [60-3]), and three are signed as designed by Deuchar (pl. [68, 88, 94]). Many are signed as engraved or etched by Deuchar. In Vol. III most plates are signed as engraved by Deuchar, and some are signed as designed by him (pl. [4, 45, 46, 48, 52, 60, 66, 99]).

Summary Note

A few plates carry a date alongside Deuchar's signature - in Volume I, of 1784, 1785, 1786, 1788 or 1802; in Volume II, of 1784, 1786, 1787 or 1788; in Volume III, of 1783, 1784 or 1786.

The plates reproduce paintings and drawings showing genre scenes or portraits, most by 17th-century Dutch artists. Most plates are etchings. A few are aquatints (I:[77]; II:[86]; III: [19, 20, 31, 38, 41, 87, 123-32]). Deuchar was an amateur etcher, but his work influenced the younger Raeburn.

Provenance

In Volume I the verso of the front loose endpaper is inscribed in ink, 'S:A:H', i.e. S.A. Hart, librarian of the Royal Academy 1864-81.

Copy Note

Pencil inscriptions occur below the following plates: Volume I pl. [47] ('Securae reddamus tempora mensae venit post multos una serena dies Tibull'); Vol. II. pl. 9 ('The flight into Egypt - p.61 - Amateur's Cat'), 11 ('The decollation of St. John the Baptist - p.91'), 12 ('J.C. driving the money-changers out of the Temple - p.72'), 46 ('Vliet'), 47 ('Vliet').
