Historical Background

Whitley was, at the time of the writing of these letters, establishing himself as a writer on art. He had yet to publish his major biography on Thomas Gainsborough, but was a regular contributor to art periodicals and the Morning Post.

Content Description

Art critics of this period commonly sought to gain early notice of the year's exhibits at the Royal Academy. It is obvious from these letters that Whitley wrote to many artists, in whom he had an interest, in order to discover particulars of their exhibits. Some provide illustrative comments on their works, others merely provide titles.
