Recalling that within a space of two months he received the news of the death of two of Linley's sons; now it is he who has lost two sons, Frederic (10) and Romulus (8) and he is trying to follow his own advice. Scarlet fever is raging in Exeter, he provides anecdotes of the progress of the disease, "I see nothing but faces bathed in tears".
