Content Description

An account of his arduous journey from Paris by diligence, a description of Lyons and the landscape around Tarare. Most of his last week in Paris was spent in the Louvre. 30th September, describes his journey down the Rhone to Avignon, meets an Italian with good English who will be his travelling companion. 2nd October, arrived by diligence at Marseille and awaits his passage to Italy, the ship is in quarantine from fear of cholera. 9th October, he is trapped in quarantine at Leghorn. 14th October, sealed in a lazaretto at Civita Vecchia, complains decorously. 16th October, arrival in Rome and straight to St. Peter's, then a walk around the Borghese gardens. He has been introduced to a group of students from the French Academy.

Among the prisoners at the Lazaretto was Mrs. Overend, whose husband gave Chantrey his first commission. Discusses the progress of cholera, or the fear of it, and speculates about political reasons for the quarantines he has endured.
