Historical Background

Walter William Ouless, RA (1848-1933) is known primarily as a portrait painter. He enrolled as a student at the Royal Academy Schools on 21st April 1865 at the age of 17. Ouless was elected ARA. on 24th January 1877 and RA on 5th May 1881. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1869.

Ouless was an active member of the Royal Academy and was a Governor of Dulwich Picture Gallery.

Theodore Blake Wirgman (1848-1925) painted portraits, genre and historical subjects. He was a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and exhibited his work at the Royal Academy from 1867.
