Historical Background

Porden was engaged on remodelling and extending Eaton Hall, Cheshire, one of the two great projects on which his architectural fame rests, for the second Earl Grosvenor between 1803 and 1812. Eaton Hall was one of the most ambitious and expensive houses of its day, and its construction marked an important step in the advance of the Gothic revival in domestic architecture.

Content Description

A long letter [14pp.] describing his journey to Eaton Hall, including observations on Coventry Cathedral, Lichfield Cathedral (commending James Wyatt's alterations) and other buildings, and incorporating sketches of architectural details.
