Content Description

Best wishes for the new year, the numbers are strange to write. They are all well, but for Clara who has influenza. Arthur is cramming for the Civil Service exam. If he passes he will have to learn a bewildering array of languages, but will get a steady income. Herbert has joined the Canopus, a new ship at Malta. He may be sent to South Africa. It is a terrible war and he can't help but fear that the national will come to pieces. But he sees it as a just war if fought in the spirit as spoke of by Salisbury, although he has his doubts about Rhodes and Joe C.. He goes now to Lord Charles Beresford's to see Wolseley who, by all accounts, has lost his head.
