Content Description

He is drunk, it is eleven o'clock and he has just had breakfast. Everybody knows him here, even the Sacristan. He will bring back a library of books and thinks Assisi "lovely". He is glad to hear she is at the seaside and is pleased to hear that Checco wants to go to Cambridge. Giotto paints with the "simple mind of a peasant" and he enjoys the church so much more than he did 20 years before. He likes peasants, they may stab you, but you always know what they mean.
