Historical Background

There are several candidates for the audience to whom this lecture was directed. Richmond was elected President of the art department of the Social Science Congress in Edinburgh in 1880. Simon Reynolds also notes his address on "Art & Life" of 1904 (p.296).

Content Description

A wide ranging essay, mentioning John Ruskin early on, and seeking to situate both fine art and the applied arts within a societal context. Discusses the rapid recent developments in Japanese society. Concludes with an extended examination of childhood development and the individuity of the mind when confronted with immutable laws of art.
