Historical Background

Commodore Rodgers was a senior American naval officer involved in The War of 1812. As Rodgers died in Philadelphia in 1838 Lawrence is obviously in error.

He provides the pleasing news that Lord Liverpool has appointed Robert Smirke as one of the architects for the office of works, the others to be John Nash and John Soane; he has heard reports that Commodore Rodgers's ship has been captured and the Commodore killed.
