Historical Background
Holloway commenced a folio edition of engravings after the seven cartoons of Raphael then at Windsor (now in the Victoria and Albert Museum) with three young ex-pupils. As a result of his initial work he was appointed historical engraver to the King. In 1820, with four plates completed, the group moved to Coltishall, near Norwich. Holloway lived to see the fifth plate published in 1824.
Content Description
Holloway opens his letter by referring to their time, many years before, as students in the Royal Academy Schools. He goes on to describe his work of engraving the cartoons of
Raphael belonging to
the King and asks Flaxman for a list of persons to whom he may write to solicit subscriptions. He discusses the cartoon of Paul and Barnabas at Lystra, and concludes by giving his reasons for his move to Norfolk with his partners and coadjutors.
