Historical Background

1811 saw a particularly bloody set of murders in Stepney, East London. These later became known as the Ratcliffe Highway murders. John Williams, a seaman, was accused of the murders on slim evidence but hung himself before arrest.

[Note in Farington's hand] that with this letter Lawrence sent his sketch of an advertisement for a print of his drawing of Williams, murderer of Mr. and Mrs. Marr.
