Content Description

Lawrence is afraid that their letters must have crossed: he had written to the Secretary a day or two ago to say that he felt sure that the [invitation] card must have been a mistake, "since I never dine out at all." He adds in a postscript: "Perhaps I should explain that I misunderstood your original invitation as you addressed it to 'Colonel' Lawrence, a rank I got rid of with some difficulty a year ago, and as you gave me a C.B. and D.S.O., decorations which I have never received, except in Who's Who: - and in self-defence, since I get many 'Strangers' letters, I never reply to them! .L."
