In the Suburb of a City, a design for ten
'average' houses, in two groups of five, facing each other
on a roadway 120 feet wide, with a fall east to west of
1 in 30.
The roadway consists of two paths 8 feet wide -
two service roads 15 feet wide - two green spaces for trees
20 feet wide, and a centre road 34 feet wide.
The sites are 50 feet wide east and west and 240
north and south with service roads north and south 20 feet
wide. The ground falls north to south 1 in 60.
The roadways must be levelled for their width and
fall east to west 1 in 30.
The project is to design these several houses in
a composed group. The houses need not all be the same
size, but they should consist of 3 sitting rooms, modern
offices, 4 best bedrooms with 3 baths, and 3 servants' rooms
with 1 bath. Garage, with accommodation for a Chauffeur
and a man-servant to be on the back rood with access to the
gardens.
The drawings to be such as are necessary and to
include -
General Block Plan showing steps and levels, with
gardens and planting - Scale 32 feet to 1 inch.
Plan of Houses - Scale 16 feet to one inch.
Plans of one House with necessary sections and
elevations - Scale 8 feet to 1 inch.
Elevations of the whole group in their relation
to each other - Scale 16 feet to 1 inch.
And such drawings as are necessary to show the
scheme as a whole and complete design.
The aspects of the houses must be considered as

road and the south side of the South Block overlooks the

The remodelling of the Entrance Hall, Principal Staircase and
Cloak Rooms at the Royal Academy

The existing Picture Stores at the back of the Principal Staircase
have perforce to be adapted for use as Cloak Rooms at a limited number
of functions when there is a very large attendance, and the communication
to and from them is found to be so inadequate as to cause great congestion
round about the staircase.
It is desired to redesign the lower floor of the Picture Stores primarily
as Cloak Rooms, with improved communication to and from the Entrance
Hall, in such a manner that they could be put to a secondary use as
Picture Stores for the greater part of the year.
All essential communications from the Entrance Hall to the various parts
of the building are to be preserved, also the main plan dimensions, the
heights from floor to ceiling, and the various floor levels of the component
parts, but students have full liberty to alter or remove such subsidiary
walls, etc, as may interfere with their schemes, provided proper provisions
is made for carrying the superstructure.
The external arcade forming Loggia at main entrance may also be
redesigned.
With regard to the detail treatments of wall surfaces, ceilings and floors
students have an absolutely free hand.

Drawings required:-
to 1/8" scale. General Plans and Sections.
to 1/2" scale. The detail treatment of a portion.
