He is grateful for Clausen's praise of his work. Most praise of painting is pointless, but Clausen knows what he talks about.
He now regrets withdrawing his name as a candidate for election to the Academy. He felt, after making his proposition, he was in "blackmailing" position. But he has not forgotten the President's kind letter. The Academy has been kind to him. Teaching is his best strength and he hasn't done much.
If his name crops up again in relation to an election he would not have the heart to deny it.
