Edward Edwards Anecdotes of Painters, 1808, p 165, states that Paton was a man of respectable character, but rather assuming in his manners. There is no record of this letter in the minutes of the general meeting of 13 June 1765 [SA/3].

Paton has received a summons to attend a meeting of the Society of Artists at the Turk's Head on Saturday 8 July, to be regularly admitted to the Society. The non-compliance with this has caused him to be excluded from the general meeting taking place that night. He has therefore produced some proposals, which he had intended to offer in person: that new members should cause a medal to be struck recording their admission; that new members should each receive a copy of the charter and laws; that the Treasurer should from time to time produce a regular account of all receipts and disbursements and all other matters transacted by him on behalf of the Society; and that a committee should be formed to examine the Treasurer's accounts, and report on them to the annual general meeting.
