Historical Background

Concerns were raised over the proposed restoration of St Mark's, Venice, by the President, Sir Frederic Leighton, at a meeting of Council of 18 November 1879. Leighton read a memorial at the meeting which he had prepared for the Italian ambassador. This was sent, by decision of the Council, to all members for their signatures. However, General Assembly minutes for 1 December 1879 record that the memorial was withdrawn, after it was learned that the restoration work was not to be carried out in the way originally described.

Content Description

Letter, with draft, to the Italian ambassador; and memorial to the Minister of Public Works of Italy signed by the President and other members.
