Historical Background

The exhibition was planned as a self-contained exhibition to be held in the Diploma Galleries, to run concurrently with the exhibition entitled "The First Hundred Years of the RA" (December 1951 - March 1952). However, only a very small selection (33) of architectural drawings was eventually shown in the Architectural Room.

Content Description

The papers comprise: memorandum entitled "Professor Richardson's List of drawings" (including details of owners), 29 August 1951; memorandum entitled "Professor Richardson's Suggestions" [for sources of drawings]; memorandum entitled "Action Points", listing potential sources and buildings; agenda and minutes of meeting of Exhibitions Committee meeting held 26 April 1951; draft letter and loan form to be sent to prospective lenders; ms notes, note for Committee meeting on Mr Sisson's investigations, and agenda and minutes of Exhibitions Committee meeting held 21 July 1951; progress report, dated 17 July 1951; lists of selections of drawings at the Victoria and Albert Museum [two versions] and the Port of London authority (selected by A. E. Richardson); list of books, prints and photographs studied/seen on a "Visit to the Crystal Palace", 22 June 1951; internal correspondence and memoranda relating to the organisation and abandonment of the exhibition, 27 April - 29 August 1951 (mainly addressed to Marshall Sisson from the Secretary to the Exhibitions Committee; memorandum entitled "List of Architects and Architectural Draughtsmen Who Exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1769-1868", and second copy of list annotated by A. E. Richardson; correspondence with lenders, 12 June - 21 November 1951; and catalogue cards for exhibits, including several works that were not eventually shown.
