Historical Background

The memorandum was probably drawn up as a result of the row over the arrangements for the 1930 Italian Art exhibition. It was probably written by the Secretary, Sir Walter Lamb, and intended to justify the claim that any profits made on special exhibitions held by permission of the Royal Academy in its galleries should go in equal shares to artistic organisations approved by it, and that one of these should always be the Royal Academy itself.
