Content Description

He has not heard from her since he left England, nor has he received their portraits. Mr. Smart is at Madras, Mr. Alefounder now at Calcutta. For himself, he has been ill and done little in the past month. He dined with her cousin on the Ganges he is as sick of his profession and of India as Humphry is. The prospect of selling her "exquisite cabinet" [of prints] is distant.

Hastings has returned to London and the sun has set on art and elegance in India. Zoffany has been as fortunate since his arrival as Humphry has been unlucky.
