, Obituary of Joseph Farington

14 January 1822.
JOSEPH FARINGTON, ESQ., R.A. – We have
the melancholy task of stating the death of this
Gentleman, whose talents in the province of
Landscape Painting have long been admired,
and whose personal merits were held in high es-
teem by some of the highest Characters in this
Country. His knowledge, judgment, and correct
taste, rendered him a leading Member of the
Royal Academy for many years, and those who
are best acquainted with his character are fully
convinced that in any differences which arose in the
election of new Members, or on any other matters,
he had always the honour of the Institution at
heart. He was a favourite pupil of WILSON, the
celebrated Landscape Painter, and in the earlier
part of his life acquired high reputation as an artist;
but being wholly independent in his situation,
he resigned the pencil, except for the amusement
of his domestic hours. His private character was
marked by a zeal for genius, in whatever sphere
of art it might appear, and by a rare union of dis-
cretion and liberality. His knowledge of the
world, long experience, matured judgment,
even temper, and candour, induced all who want-
ed advice in the important concerns of life, to
resort to him for counsel, which he was always
ready to afford. He had possessed an uncom-
monly fine person in figure and countenance.
His manners were easy, affable, and open,
and altogether he was an ornament to society
in all the relations of life. We are not acquaint-
ed with the particulars of his lamented death,
but we understand, that being on a visit in
Lancashire, his native county, and returning
from Church yesterday se’nnight*, his foot slipped,
and his head fell with such violence, that he
only survived two hours after this melancholy
accident. Mr. FARINGTON had been married to
a Lady of a most respectable family, and death
had deprived him many years of this truly amiable
and intelligent Consort. Mr. FARINGTON, we
believe, was about seventy-two years of age.
