Historical Background

Read at the meeting of Council of 22 March 1809, and the offer of the head as his diploma work rejected on the grounds that casts were inadmissible from sculptors. Marchant was instructed to submit an engraved gem instead. Marchant's original offer of a set of impressions of gems had been rejected by the Council of 15 March 1809 on the grounds that they were not original works. The impressions were afterwards presented by him to the Royal Academy.

Content Description

Recording his gratitude at his election as an Academician, offering a cast of a female head as his diploma work, and explaining that the previous offer of a set of his works had been intended only as a temporary deposit.
