Historical Background
HMS Bulwark was destroyed by an explosion at Sheerness in November 1914. There were only twelve eventual survivors out of her complement of 750.
Content Description
The writer reports a conversation with Alan Sims, son of Charles Sims RA. This included details of the cause of Charles Sims's limp, and the effect on him of the death of his eldest son, John, a midshipman killed on HMS Bulwark.
The writer also relates a story about another painter,
Maurice Greiffenhagen, who also lost his eldest son in the navy, and his wife's efforts after the war to find out if their son was still alive.
