He sends a letter from Mr. Thoms. Halton [not found]; parts of his drapery of the painting, he is also copying a picture of Sir Joshua's from the exhibition of last year, the "Children of the wood"; he has visited three exhibitions, the room in Pell Mell[sic] is now contemptable, the Society of Artists now has a grand space, within were great pieces by Gilpin, Stubbs and Wright of Derby; the Royal Academy is not so grand, there is a fine full-length of Mr. Ferguson by Simmons of Bristol; Northcote talks of travels near London; he has seen Garrick as Richard III and provides his opinion; also describes a visit to Ranelagh where he met Dr. Goldsmith, [Charles] Gill [Academy student] laughed with him about Roberts's Academy figures; he describes a painting by [Sir Joshua] of Miss Child; he concludes with some business involving, among others, Dolland; finally he mentions seeing the painted hall at Greenwich by Sir James Thornhill.
