Historical Background

The Secretary had been instructed at a meeting of the Council of 6 May 1930 to protest formally to the BBC over disparaging remarks on the exhibition, which had been broadcast on the evening of the private view day. Reith's reply was read at the meeting of 20 May 1930, and a resolution passed to invite Sir Francis Newbolt to broadcast in accordance with the BBC's suggestion.
