Historical Background

"At sixty years of age, in 1949, [Rushbury] was elected keeper of the Royal Academy and, as head of its schools until his retirement in 1964, did much to encourage the students through his experiences and to help them to tread their own paths. [DNB].

Content Description

This group of records forms an important survival: the records of Henry Rushbury as Keeper, with elements dating from the time of his predecessors. Although incomplete, there is undoubtedly material of great interest. Students of the period included Mervyn Peake, Anthony Caro and Bryan Kneale, all of whom are represented here.

Acquisition Details

The records were found at the Camden warehouse in 1999. They were probably intended for inclusion in the archive.

Arrangement

The records were found in 1999 divided into 13 bundles.
