Content Description

This volume is formed of blank but ruled paper and Richmond used it as a daily remembrancer in the same manner as the other diaries. Daily entries are kept for the first part of his visit and they following the pattern found in the previous Rome diary and journal.

Commences Oct 18th, (noting in a later hand that he travelled with his brother Tom) and is already unhappy at leaving his family; meets up with Geldhart soon after arriving in Rome and, not long after that, Severn; meets up subsequently with a Mr. Melville & Mrs. Melville; in November he spends a great deal of time drawing at Severn's house; bumps into Mr. Rogers on the 5th; 16th December, writes of John Ruskin for the first time; 22nd December writes of calling on Gruner and Stevens; 30th dines at Mrs. Haywards and sees Gibson and the Melvilles.

The diary breaks off on January the 1st 1841. A later note suggests that his health was not too good but another explanation may lie in his obvious discomfort at leaving his young family behind.
