Content Description

The letter relates to a drawing of Queen Victoria after death by Hubert von Herkomer. The King does not want the sketch published, but consents to its exhibition, with the proceeds going to the Princess of Wales's Fund. Holford asks if a room could be set aside at the RA: "it would never do to have it exhibited at a tradesman's gallery." The Royal Family are of opinion that a high admission (5s.) should be charged, as the exhibition is meant more for individuals who had met the Queen, than for the public. Holford asks for advice on these points, and for the views of Professor Herkomer on how the work should be hung. There is to be no advertising of any sort.
