Historical Background
Read at meeting of Council of 14 June 1830. The minutes note that the letter was accompanied by "an original bas-relief in marble". It was resolved at the meeting that the thanks of the Academy should be transmitted to Sir George Beaumont "for this valuable bequest."

Beaumont presents a "unique specimen of art" [the Tadei tondo, or 'The Madonna and Child with the Infant St John’] by
Michelangelo, in accordance with the intentions of his late lamented relation [Sir George Beaumont] and Lady Beaumont, trusting "to the known liberality of the President and Council of the Royal Academy to allow all artists to have free access to it."
