Extent & medium
Landseer was employed frequently as a portraitist in the 1830s, even though he never found human likenesses easy [DNB].
Landseer says that he had been advised not to undertake the portait of the poet, "simply to avoid the consequences." Landseer adds that he does so with reluctance, as he felt convinced that the subject's features might be rendered with truth and at the same time his good looks secured.
