Historical Background

The members of the new Royal Academy had refused their former colleagues in the Society of Artists the right to use the former equipment of St Martin's Lane Academy. The Society therefore took steps to found its own academy in Maiden Lane. At a Directors' meeting of 12 September 1769 it was agreed "that the Rules and Regulations of the said Academy, be as near as possible those of the Academy lately held in St Martin's Lane" [Hargraves, pp.142-45].
