Content Description

Sir William Hamilton was very kind during his stay in Naples, and told him that Rainsford's letter to him did not mention painting the Queen of Naples; he gained permission to copy 'Danae' by Titian, asked that it be taken down into a room, as was done for Angelica, but was refused; despite the involvement of the King returned to Rome disappointed; Prince Aldobrandini sends his regards to the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and the Duke of Cumberland; Cardinal Casali is somewhat in disgrace, as all the favourites of the late Pope; the Romans already dislike the present Pope [Pius VI] as he "does nothing"; gives his own observations on Pius VI; Lord Cowper has offered to get him permission to copy the pictures at Florence.
