Content Description

The text is the final draft of Leighton's discourse to the students in 1891. There are many minor alterations to the text, but it is predominately fair. The subject is French art.

At the rear of the volume are pasted three letters relating to the sale of the volume in 1896.

Provenance

The manuscript was handed by Leighton to one "Underhill", shortly before his death. Underhill pre-deceased Leighton but in 1896, on Leighton's death, Mrs Underhill saught to sell the manuscript for £5. It was sold to M.H. Spielmann for 5 guineas.

Acquisition Details

The manuscript was presented to the Academy by Percy E. Spielmann, son of Marion Spielmann, in 1950.
