Historical Background

Clausen was appointed Professor of Painting of the Royal Academy in 1904. He wrote sixteen lectures which were extremely well received and subsequently published.

Content Description

The first four documents are drafts of lectures given at the Royal Academy. Subsequent lectures, speeches or essays provide little indication of their intended purpose or audience. It is likely that some were produced for the Art Workers Guild.
