Historical Background

On the 4th May Mary Wood, "an elderly woman of peaceable appearance", attacked John Singer Sargent's portrait of Henry James with a meat chopper. This was followed by another "outrage" on the 12th May when the work damaged was Sir Hubert von Herkomer's portrait of the Duke of Wellington.
