Coverage resulting from a suffragette action
Extent & medium
On the 4th May Mary Wood, "an elderly woman of peaceable appearance", attacked John Singer Sargent's
portrait of Henry James
with a meat chopper. This was followed by another "outrage" on the 12th May when the work damaged was Sir Hubert von Herkomer's
portrait of the Duke of Wellington.
A small collection of cuttings relating to these incidents, taken from the Times, the Morning Post, the Daily Graphic, the Daily Sketch, the Daily Telegraph and the Standard.
