Volume of minutes of the Council, including the following selected entries: a note of the presentation of a volume containing some of the bye-laws of the Society of Artists, dated 1768, 11 January 1894; complaint of the Keeper, Philip Hermogenes Calderon, that the temperature in the life school was often not warm enough for the model in consequence of the installation of electric light, 29 May 1894; request by the Sunday League and Sunday Society to join a deputation to the Prime Minister, the Earl of Rosebery to urge the opening of national museums and art galleries on Sundays declined, 29 May 1894; note of a report on what constituted a lithograph, 19 June 1894; the poor health of the President, Lord Leighton, 26 March 1895 and resolutions passed following his death, 25 January 1896; note of a letter from the Science and Art Department, South Kensington, expressing concern about the public display of the Chantrey painting ‘St Elizabeth of Hungary’s Great Act of Renunciation’ by Philip Hermogenes Calderon, on account of earlier controversy, 16 June 1896; the decision to suspend one of the students, found guilty of gross misbehaviour after he had kissed one of the female models in the Schools, 28 July 1896; resolutions adopted following the death of the President, Sir John Everett Millais, 14 August 1896; opinion of the President, Sir Edward Poynter, that an approach should be made to the Government to house the Chantrey Bequest paintings in the new Tate Gallery, 11 May and 15 June 1897, and resolution that the Chantrey works be handed over the Government, 8 July 1897; resolution governing the terms on which photography of winter exhibition works was to be permissible, 25 January 1898; resolution to hold consultations about a bill relating to artistic copyright, 13 December 1898 and 24 January 1899; the rejection of an approach from Sir Arthur Sullivan on behalf of the directors of the Crystal Palace to exhibit doubtful summer exhibition paintings not hung, 24 January 1899; and a note of a consultation with the Royal Academy’s solicitors as to the legality of the sale of unclaimed summer exhibition paintings, 9 May 1899.
