Volume of minutes of the Council, including the following selected entries: the passing of a resolution to purchase twelve letters of Thomas Gainsborough and a manuscript memoir written by their recipient [William] Jackson, 20 November 1888; the receipt of a letter from the publishers, Cassell, wishing to produce an illustrated catalogue of the 1889 summer exhibition along the lines of Royal Academy Pictures of 1888 and a note of the decision to decline the request, 22 January 1889; the presentation by Mrs Dawkins of ‘Dedham Lock’ or ‘The Leaping Horse’ by John Constable, 5 March 1889; the decision to request that the Treasurer look for more basement storage space because of overcrowding and damage to the large and increasing numbers of rejected and doubtful summer exhibition works, 28 May 1889; discussion of the proposal to provide a partially draped male model for female students, 26 November 1889; a note that Hubert Herkomer, had been informed with regret that he could not submit a portrait of Briton Riviere as his diploma work because it had already been exhibited at the summer exhibition, 27 May 1890; copy of a letter from the Chief Commissioner, HM Office of Works, responding to the Royal Academy’s concerns about the raising of the height of the University of London buildings, Burlington Gardens, 18 November 1890 and notes on the Royal Academy’s acceptance of a proposal that they enter into discussions on the matter, 1 December 1890; a note of the indignation expressed by the Duke of Norfolk on behalf of the Catholic Union of Great Britain at the exhibition of the Chantrey painting ‘St Elizabeth of Hungary’s Great Act of Renunciation’ by Philip Hermogenes Calderon, 26 May 1891 and a similar appeal by the Duchess Dowager of Buccleuch and 202 Roman Catholic ladies, 28 July 1891; copies of correspondence with the Secretary of the Office of Works relative to the heightening of the buildings of the University of London, Burlington Gardens, containing an enquiry as to whether there was any contingency for the removal elsewhere of the Royal Academy Schools, 28 July 1891; the decision to obtain a supply of electricity from the Pall Mall & St James’ Electric Light Company, 3 November 1891; copy of a letter from HM Office of Works stating that they intended to charge the Royal Academy annually for part of the maintenance costs of the Burlington House site, including the upkeep of the road from Piccadilly to Burlington Gardens and the quadrangle, 7 June 1892; censure for the Assistant Librarian as a result of a reduction in the attendance of students in the Library, 22 March and 12 April 1892; electoral procedure relating to Honorary Foreign Academicians, 14 June 1892; a resolution to turn down a further appeal from the Sunday Society to open the summer exhibition on Sundays, 13 December 1892; note of a memorial submitted to Council by members of the Royal Academy interested in architecture and past and present students calling for improvements in the training of young architects, 23 May 1893; and a note of proposals to be submitted to the General Assembly for the careful draping of the male model for female students, 14 December 1893.
