Content Description

Minutes of meetings of the Council, including the following selected entries: report of the Secretary, Sidney Hutchison, that he had investigated the proposed reintroduction of ivories for Schools students, but that the estimates given had seemed very costly, and Sir Hugh Casson authorised to draft a letter for the signature of the President, Sir Thomas Monnington, asking Westminster City Council not to give their approval for a proposed redevelopment of Piccadilly between Bond Street and Albemarle Street, 24 October 1972 and entries relating a request from Sotheby’s to have part use of the whole of Burlington House from October 1974 to September 1976, “in return for a considerable fee” while their existing premises were being rebuilt, including the referring of the proposal to the Co-ordinating Group of the Policy Advisory Committee, 14 November 1972, the Policy Advisory Committee and the Council in general against the proposal (entailing either a fee of £750,000 at the start of the period or £50,000 per year followed by a capital payment of £1,125,000, with some provision for shorter summer exhibitions), the comment of the Treasurer, William Holford, on the considerable financial and practical advantages if the terms were satisfactory, 5 December 1972; and the decision to continue negotiations with Sotheby’s, 14 December 1972.
