Minutes of meetings of the Council, including the following selected entries: agreement to allow the televising of speeches at the annual dinner, 17 March 1964; a suggestion by Raymond Cowern that more money ought to be devoted to the Library met by the contention of the President, Sir Charles Wheeler, that the Library’s objectives were more limited than those of other art colleges, 26 May 1964; a discussion of the annual report of the Finance Committee, which criticised the “unsatisfactory” state of the Royal Academy’s finances, including critical comments by Donald McMorran, a Finance Committee member, who called for the creation of a sub-committee of enquiry to clarify responsibility for finance, 13 July 1964 and further, 13 October 1964, and the resulting resignation of Sir Basil Spence as Treasurer and Professor of Architecture, citing what he regarded as personal criticism by McMorran and a lack of support from other Council members, 27 October 1964; and discussion of the need to give the summer exhibition a new look, following the reading of a letter from Carel Weight on behalf of twenty members, 17 November 1964.
