Historical Background

Council decided at the meeting of 14 April 1790 not admit Brown's portrait of the King because it had not been sent in time. On 20 April the Secretary was instructed to ask Brown to remove the painting from the Academy.

Content Description

The first seven letters relate to the decision not to admit Brown's full length portrait of King George III to the exhibition, 1790; the remaining letter relates to his unsuccessful candidature for Associateship, 1794.
