Historical Background

Gibson's statue of Bishop van Mildert (1836), who pioneered the founding of the university at Durham, is in Durham Cathedral.

Content Description

The letter relates to the safe arrival and positioning [in Durham Cathedral] of the statue [of Bishop van Mildert.] The work was universally admired, but there was a wish that Gibson would visit Durham and deepen a few of the lines on the face, which was "unquestionably too young." The writer, who includes a sketch of a suggested position for the statue in the cathedral, goes on to make arrangements for making payment to Gibson for the work.
