Historical Background
Tassaert's museum opened in the Strand exhibition room on 15 April 1777. Soon after its opening, spurious advertisements promoting it began to appear in the press, published falsely in the name of the Directors of the Society of Artists, followed by hoax addresses defending the museum [draft minutes of meeting of Directors, 8 April 1777, SA/15/194; Hargraves, p.206-7.]
