Holmes thanks Webb for the loan of the cartoon of [‘The Virgin and Child with St Anne and St John the Baptist’] by
Leonardo: he had been repeatedly asked whether the loan could be made permanent, but knew the feelings of the Council in the matter. He suggests that the slip separating the cartoon from the glass should be increased to at least half an inch, because of the formation of an efflorescence or deposit on the glass, which he had noticed in other cases where a work of art was very near to the glass. If this change were made, he requests permission to have the cartoon photographed.
