Pope Pius IX fled Rome in 1848 during the short lived Roman Republic.

Content Description

Informing his correspondent that he had finished the statuette of 'Cupid Disguised as a Shepherd', after two years of ill health. Gibson mentions the flight of the pope from Rome. He asks to be allowed to recommend a pedestal for the statuette.
