He has tried to get to the [
Society of Artists] exhibition when in London, but is usually too busy; he will send the varnish, which Humphry should put on a window sill to "finish"; before painting on paper he should prepare it either with gum arabic water or with mucilage of quince seed; he instructs Humphry not to mix the varnish with paint and to let each layer dry properly before applying the next.
Humphry notes that the writer was an eminent "dilenttant chemist".
