Historical Background

A specially convened meeting of Council was held on 27 April 1921, "in consequence of a communication from the King expressing a grave doubt whether in view of the serious situation arising from the coal strike the Dinner should be held as arranged". It was resolved unanimously not to hold the annual dinner.

Content Description

Correspondence from Birch's, Walter Lawrence, 15 Cornhill, E.C.3., to the Secretary enclosing suggested menu and wine list for the annual dinner of 1921; blank letter of invitation; copy letter from the Secretary to Sir Godfrey Thomas, Bt., informing him of the list of toasts for the dinner; list of recipients of telegram informing them that the Royal Academy had decided to abandon its dinner scheduled to be held on 29 April 1921, because of the "present coal strike and consequent distress"; and copies of similar printed memoranda for members and non-members.
