Historical Background

Stubbs was Treasurer of the Society of Artists from Sir William Chambers's resignation in 1768 to 1772, when he became President. The Society's worsening financial difficulties of the early 1770s saw him ousted from the Presidency in 1773 without gaining a second term, and an intensive examination of the Society's fiscal woes by the Committee of Accounts at the end of the same year focussed on his period as Treasurer. Stubbs left to join the Royal Academy in 1775.

Content Description

An itemised record of all receipts and expenditure of the Society of Artists during the period of Stubbs's Treasurership, verified by the Committee of Accounts and signed by the members of the Committee, 14 December 1773.
