Historical Background

There are references in Joseph Farington's diary to the increasing imbecility of Yenn by the spring of 1820: 'Sir T. Lawrence speaking to me abt. appointing a new Treasurer in consequence of Yenn's imbecility mentioned Robert Smirke as the most proper person.' (XVI/5491, 10 April 1820).

Content Description

This series comprises the surviving personal account books of the RA's second Treasurer, John Yenn. The volumes all contain his own bookplate, an engraved armorial device bearing the motto 'Confido' with Yenn's name below. The volumes provide a record of itemised quarterly expenditure [abstracts of bills] and quarterly and annual balance sheets. There is also one loose balance sheet for the year 1811.
