Content Description

Draft letter in which Middleton Todd thanks Vincent for the gift of a book about the University of Birmingham, which would be a very nice souvenir of his visit to paint the portrait of the Pro-Chancellor. The portrait had been very much praised by members of the Royal Academy: in particular Philip Connard, Walter Russell, Laura Knight and others. Middleton Todd continues: "I mentioned to one distinguished painter that the press had said little about it & his reply was that they always miss the best things in the exhibition because the best things are quiet. The only consolation is that the works they do mention are to my way of thinking pretty bad."
